After seven years of marriage, the beautiful Lady Brenda Last is bored with life at Hetton Abbey, the Gothic mansion that is the pride and joy of her husband, Tony. She drifts into an affair with the shallow socialite John Beaver and forsakes Tony for the Belgravia set. Brilliantly combining tragedy, comedy and savage irony, A Handful of Dust captures the irresponsible mood of the 'crazy and sterile generation' between the wars. This breakdown of the Last marriage is a painful, comic re-working of Waugh's own divorce, and a symbol of the disintegration of society.

Ο Evelyn Waugh (1903-1966) γεννήθηκε στο Λονδίνο και σπούδασε στην Οξφόρδη. Το πρώτο του μυθιστόρημα "Decline and fall" κυκλοφόρησε το 1928 και γνώρισε αμέσως μεγάλη επιτυχία καθιερώνοντάς τον στο λογοτεχνικό είδος όπου έμελλε να διαπρέψει: την κοινωνική σάτιρα και την καυστική κωμωδία με επίκεντρο τη Χρυσή Νεολαία του Μεσοπολέμου και τις απεγνωσμένες προσπάθειές της να ξεφύγει από το προνομιούχο αλλά ασφυκτικό της περιβάλλον. Ακολούθησαν τα μυθιστορήματα "Πρόστυχα κορμιά", "Black mischief", "A handful of dust", "Scoop", "Brideshead revisited" κ.ά. Αξίζει ακόμη να μνημονευθεί η τριλογία των πολεμικών του αναμνήσεων με τον γενικό τίτλο "The sword of honour", καθώς και τα αποκαλυπτικά ημερολόγιά του. Όπως έγραψε ο κριτικός λογοτεχνίας Edmund Wilson, "Τα μυθιστορήματα του Έβελυν Γουώ είναι το μόνο πράγμα που γράφτηκε στην Αγγλία άξιο να συγκριθεί με το έργο του Φιτζέραλντ και του Χεμινγουέη... Νομίζω ότι θα αντέξουν στο χρόνο και ότι ο Γουώ [...] θα μνημονεύεται ως η μοναδική πρώτης γραμμής κωμική ιδιοφυΐα που εμφανίστηκε στην Αγγλία μετά τον Μπέρναρντ Σω".
