Ο Τζων Μπέργκερ (1926-2017), συγγραφέας, ζωγράφος, σεναριογράφος, κορυφαίος θεωρητικός της τέχνης και διανοούμενος, γεννήθηκε στο Λονδίνο. Μετά τη θητεία του στο στρατό (1944-46), παρακολούθησε τις Σχολές Καλών Τεχνών Chelsea School of Art και Central School of Art του Λονδίνου και στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του ΄40 άρχισε να εκθέτει σε μικρές γκαλερί του Λονδίνου ως ζωγράφος (Wildenstein, Redfern, κ.ά.). Λίγο αργότερα εμφανίστηκε με κριτικά άρθρα του στο περιοδικό "New Statesman", υιοθετώντας μια ριζοσπαστική, μαρξιστική όσο και ουμανιστική προσέγγιση του μοντερνισμού. Τα μυθιστορήματά του, πρωτότυπα σε μορφή και με ιστορική και πολιτική διεισδυτικότητα, αντλούν τα θέματά τους από τον κόσμο της τέχνης και του κριτικού του πνεύματος: "A Painter of Our Time" (1958), "The Foot of Clive" (1962), "Corker΄s Freedom" (1964), "G." (που βραβεύθηκε με τα βραβεία Booker και James Tait Black Memorial το 1972), "Into Their Labours" (τριλογία: "Pig Earth", 1979, "Once in Europa", 1987, "Lilac and Flag", 1990), "To The Wedding" (1995), "King: A Street Story" (1999), "Here Is Where We Meet" (2005), "From A to X" (2008). Τη δεκαετία του ΄70 έγραψε το σενάριο για τις ταινίες του Ελβετού σκηνοθέτη Alain Tanner, "La Salamandre" (1971), "The Middle of the World" (1974) και "Jonah Who Will Be 25 in the Year 2000" (1976). Τη δεκαετία του ΄80 έζησε και εργάστηκε σε ένα μικρό χωριό στις Γαλλικές Άλπεις, στο χώρο όπου διαδραματίζεται η μυθιστορηματική τριλογία του "Into Their Labours". Με το βιβλίο του "Από την Άιντα στον Χαβιέρ", με αντικείμενο τις επιστολές της γυναίκας του προς έναν φυλακισμένο τρομοκράτη ("From A to X", ελλ. έκδ. Πατάκη, 2013) ο Μπέργκερ ήταν και πάλι υποψήφιος για το βραβείο Booker το 2008. Πέθανε στο σπίτι του στο προάστιο Antony του Παρισιού, στις 2 Ιανουαρίου 2017, σε ηλικία 90 ετών.
