Edith Wharton (Συγγραφέας)

H Ίντιθ Γουόρτον γεννήθηκε το 1862 από πλούσια οικογένεια της Νέας Υόρκης. Το 1885 παντρεύτηκε τον ΄Εντουαρντ Pόμπινς Γουόρτον, τραπεζίτη από τη Βοστόνη. Εγκαταστάθηκαν στη Γαλλία το 1907, αλλά δεν πήγε καλά ο γάμος τους και χώρισαν το 1913, τόσο λόγω των ψυχολογικών προβλημάτων του ΄Εντουαρντ όσο και λόγω της προσπάθειας της Ίντιθ να συνδυάσει τα καθήκοντα της συζύγου με τις φιλοδοξίες της συγγραφέως. Μετά το διαζύγιό της, η Ίντιθ συνέχισε να ζει στη Γαλλία, όπου παρέμεινε μέχρι το θάνατό της. Στο λογοτεχνικό σαλόνι της σύχναζαν συγγραφείς όπως ο συμπατριώτης της Χένρι Τζέιμς, με τον οποίο ήταν στενοί φίλοι, ο Γουόλτερ Μπέρι και πολλοί άλλοι. Μεταξύ των έργων της συμπεριλαμβάνονται "Τα χρόνια της αθωότητας" , "Το σπίτι της ευθυμίας", "Μαντάμ ντε Τρέιμ", "Χαμένες ψυχές και άλλα διηγήματα", "Οι αντίζηλες" κ.ά. Δούλευε το τελευταίο της μυθιστόρημα "Οι κουρσάροι", όταν πέθανε στις 11 Αυγούστου 1937.
